Bbakasa Primary School

Bbakasa Primary School is twinned with Waun Wen Primary School in Swansea under The British Council Connecting Classrooms Scheme. The school educates approximately 400 children ( Grades 1-7) and is  about 40 minutes drive from Siavonga town. In the rainy season it is often difficult to access as the road gets washed away.

Children walk to school from up to 10km away, setting out when it is still dark. On our first visit in January 2015, Mr Edson the Head Teacher apologised for poor attendance. A pair of lions had wandered across the River Zambezi from Zimbabwe and pupils were afraid to come to school!

We installed solar panels and set up a small computer suite in the library.

In 2019 we improved on the resource access and digital literacy in Bbakasa. We did this by installing a solar powered computer hub consisting of 5 Raspberry Pi computers and a server with enhanced offline learning resources, 2 teacher’s laptops a TV for demonstrations and LED lighting. This required more solar power than we originally installed in the school in 2015. We were able to do this thanks to funding from Welsh Government under their Wales and Africa Grant Scheme. Due to COVID we could not travel but our partners Muhunya Solar completed the installation for us.
